Handcrafted Cotton Crochet from Kadoma

A Cotton Growing Area
Kadoma is in a cotton growing area of Zimbabwe and the cotton is also processed into yarn and cloth in the town, for example by the David Whitehead Company.

A Cottage Industry
Many women have learnt to make beautiful household items and clothing in the local cotton. The patterns they have developed are influenced by the local flowers and wildlife, for example the flame lily, mimosa, jacaranda, elephant and Zimbabwe bird. Where opportunities for work while raising a family are scarce this is an important source of income for women and their families. The craft they produce is sold either in the local market or taken to South Africa or tourist areas to be sold. Without a reliable commercial outlet, and dependent on a variable tourist industry it is far from a steady income however.

Crochet and the Link
From the first days of visits by people from Stevenage the crochet was a popular souvenir. The cotton tablecloths, lacy tops and other goods proved hardwearing as well as attractive and fitted in with changing fashions. Consequently, when it was suggested that we take some of the items to sell it was agreed that this would fit in well with our aims. We use it to illustrate the skills and distinctiveness of the local economy in Kadoma whilst raising money for the producers and the Link. Our stall is always the better for the display of crochet and we have repeat customers who look out for us at our regular appearances. We are always at Stevenage Day, and for the past few years have had a stall at the Wendover Arm Canal Festival, as well as other venues such the Celebration concert and local events around Stevenage.

The Crochet
The most popular items have proved to be women’s and children’s tops which come in various styles from ‘boob tubes’ to tops suitable for a night out and go with anything from denim to velvet. They are priced from £2 to £10. Also popular are large cloths suitable for a tablecloth, throw or bedspread. These cost from £20 to £30. We also have doilies, very useful to protect the furniture from pot plants and ornaments, cushion covers, table runners and small table cloths for a coffee table. These cost from £1 to £5. Occasionally we have other examples of Kadoma craft work; wood turning, stone carvings, sand pictures or embroidery and sell these alongside.
