Stevenage 60 years Anniversary 1946-2006
A report by Kay Collier
Last year Stevenage celebrated the fact that the New Town was 60 years old. Many events took place to
celebrate this anniversary, including a rose bush planting which a member of Cornerstone (an inter-church
youth group, linked with youngsters in Kadoma) attended. There have been t-shirts printed and a tapestry made
with sections in it from lots of different organisations in Stevenage including Stevenage/Kadoma Link.
THE TAPESTRY SECTION 24cm wide by 22cm high
The tapestry section is made up of the Zimbabwe flag with the Stevenage/Kadoma Logo underneath.
The flag is made up of seven equal horizontal bands of green, yellow, red, black, red, yellow and green
with a white isosceles triangle edged in black with its base on the hoist side; a yellow Zimbabwe bird
representing the long history of the country is superimposed on a red five-pointed star in the centre of
the triangle, which symbolises peace; green symbolises agriculture, yellow – mineral wealth, red – blood
shed to achieve independence, and black stands for the native people.
The Finale Event was held in a large concert hall which is part of Stevenage Arts and Leisure Centre.
This was a wonderful afternoon. A time to get nostalgic. There was a video with commentary which showed pictures
of the New Town of Stevenage in its early days and going right up to present day. The video was shown in sections
interspersed with wonderful acts of dance, music and singing. This included “Blessings” an Afro-jazz band in
Hertfordshire and strongly connected to the Stevenage/ Kadoma Link. There were also pictures in the video taken
when members of the Link went out to Kadoma in the summer.
The whole celebration was something that I am sure will not be forgotten for a long time.
